Requirements

  • Mac: macOS (Apple silicon or Intel)
  • Windows: Windows 10 or 11 with PowerPoint
  • Bitfocus Companion
  • All computers on the same private network

Good to know

  • No password. Use only on a private, trusted network.
  • Not code-signed. On Mac, right-click → Open the first time. On Windows, choose More info → Run anyway.
  • On Mac, allow GRP Click to control PowerPoint or Keynote when asked.
  • Keynote is Mac only. Go to slide number works in PowerPoint, not Keynote.

Questions

Which app does it control if PowerPoint and Keynote are both open?+

PowerPoint. The receiver only uses Keynote when Keynote is running and PowerPoint is not.

Does every command work in Keynote?+

Next, previous, first, last, start and end all work. Go to slide number works in PowerPoint only.

How do I find a computer's IP address?+

On Windows, the installer shows it at the end, or run ipconfig in a Command Prompt. On Mac, open System Settings → Network → your connection → Details → TCP/IP. Use the network address, not 127.0.0.1.

My Mac or PC warns me when I install it. Is that normal?+

Yes. The installers aren't code-signed yet. On Mac, right-click the .pkg and choose Open. On Windows, click More info → Run anyway.

macOS asked if GRP Click can control PowerPoint or Keynote.+

Click OK. To change it later, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Automation.

Which user account should I install it on?+

The same account that runs PowerPoint or Keynote. The receiver controls the apps in your own desktop session.

What happens if a presentation computer restarts?+

The receiver starts again when you log in, and Companion reconnects to it automatically. The connection status shows how many machines are connected.

Which machine do the preset buttons control?+

Machine 1 by default. Change the Machine dropdown on any button to target machines 2 to 10.

Is it secure?+

There's no password and commands aren't encrypted. Anyone on the same network who can reach port 8765 can move the slides, so only use it on a private network you trust, never on guest Wi-Fi or the open internet.

Can I change the port?+

Yes. The default is 8765. If you change it on the receiver, enter the same port in the Companion connection.
